Summary:

The pilot and a friend had flown from Manchester (Barton) to Huddersfield (Crosland Moor). The weather was CAVOK and the aircraft was positioned downwind, right hand for Runway 25. The pilot thought the windsock indicated a slight crosswind from the right and he made a normal approach, flaring above the runway threshold on the centreline. He added some power to compensate for the upslope and the aircraft drifted to the left, the tail wheel touching down on the grass to the left of the runway. The pilot initiated a go around but the tail struck a grass mound which caused the aircraft to slow down and land. He shut down the aircraft and both occupants exited uninjured. The pilot stated that he had underestimated the strength of the crosswind.
