Piper PA-28-181 Cherokee Archer III, G-CCHL

Summary:

The aircraft was landing on Runway 22 at Lydd Airport with a gusting surface wind of 240º/21 kt. The pilot configured the aircraft with two stages of flap and increased his approach speed from 75 kt to 80 kt to compensate for the wind. Runway 22 was undergoing resurfacing work and the threshold was displaced, marked by a board across the runway and a line of large motorway maintenance cones also across the runway a short distance beyond the board. As the pilot approached the cones, expecting to land beyond them, he closed the throttle and flared the aircraft but it sank and struck the cones causing minor damage.
