Aero AT-3 R100, G-SYEL

Summary:

The aircraft bounced on touchdown after a normal approach to the grass Runway 23 at Sywell in conditions of light wind and good visibility. The pilot applied power and continued the approach but the second touchdown was “a little heavy”. Witnesses saw the aircraft land on its nose landing gear, which collapsed allowing the propeller to strike the ground. The aircraft stopped very quickly but there was no fire and the uninjured pilot was able to vacate the aircraft without assistance. The aircraft operator’s maintenance organisation found no evidence of any mechanical defect that might have contributed to failure of the nose landing gear. The pilot commented that he should have executed a go-around after the bounce.
