DH82A Tiger Moth, G-AVPJ

Summary:

After a flight of approximately 25 minutes, the engine began to loose power and failed to respond to throttle inputs. The pilot selected a suitable field and, initially, carried out an uneventful landing on the main wheels. The aircraft’s tail was up held in preparation for lowering when the speed had decayed sufficiently. However, as the aircraft travelled though the field, the right main wheel ran into a deep depression, which the pilot had not seen, causing the right landing gear strut to collapse and the aircraft to become inverted. The pilot and passenger were uninjured and able to vacate the aircraft unassisted. Initial examination of the engine confirmed that the loss of power was due to the failure of a valve stem.
